Deposit and excess in car rental: how it works

Car rental agency counter in Agadir

Two words come up with every rental and are regularly confused: the deposit and the excess. They are not two names for the same thing, and understanding the difference avoids most of the unpleasant surprises at the counter.

The deposit is an amount blocked on your bank card for the duration of the rental. It is not taken as long as nothing happens. The excess is the amount that stays your responsibility in case of damage, even when you are insured. One is a temporary guarantee, the other a ceiling on your liability.

The deposit: what is blocked and when

When the keys are handed over, the agency takes a card imprint or places a hold. The amount often appears among your pending transactions, which makes it look like a payment. It is not one: the money stays in your account but becomes unavailable.

Three practical points that matter more than the amount itself:

The amount depends on the vehicle: it is higher on a larger category than on a small car. It appears on the vehicle page when you book, and that is when to look at it, not at one in the morning after a night flight.

The excess: what stays your responsibility

A rental car is insured. That does not mean any damage is free for you. The excess is the share you pay in case of a claim, whatever the cause, up to that amount.

A simple example, with no invented figures: if the repair costs less than the excess, you pay the repair. If it costs more, you pay the excess and the insurance covers the rest. It is that ceiling the protection levels bring down, and that is the whole point of the three protection levels.

Two things are never covered, whatever the level:

Underbody damage deserves a mention of its own. In the Souss it almost never comes from an accident but from speed bumps, high, frequent and sometimes unpainted. They are the leading cause of dispute on return, and that is exactly where to look before you drive off.

Who drives, and why it changes the deposit

The contract only covers the drivers named on it. A friend who takes the wheel for half an hour on the Immouzzer road is not insured, and damage occurring then falls outside the cover: the excess no longer applies, the whole of the damage comes back to the renter.

Adding a second driver is done at signature, with their licence in front of the agent. It takes two minutes and it is the only way to share the driving on a long trip while staying within the rules.

Age plays a part too. The youngest drivers and recently issued licences often fall under particular conditions, because the claims statistics are not the same. If that is your case, ask when you book rather than discovering it at the counter.

The ten minutes that protect you

The deposit only becomes a problem when damage appears that nobody can date. The defence costs nothing:

The full sequence at the counter is in renting a car at Agadir Al Massira airport.

On return

Ask for a signed document stating that the vehicle was returned undamaged, and keep it until the deposit has actually been released on your account. It is the only piece of paper that protects you if a charge appears three weeks later.

Keep the pump receipt from the last fill up too: it is your proof if the fuel level is questioned.

Finally, if you return the car in a different city from the one you collected it in, a surcharge applies and is dealt with separately in returning the car in another city.

Look at the deposit and the excess before booking, not at the counter. Both amounts appear on each vehicle page: see car rental in Agadir. The rest of the formalities are in the complete guide to renting in Agadir. A question before you travel? WhatsApp on +212 660 499 714.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the deposit and the excess?
The deposit is an amount blocked on your card during the rental and released at the end if nothing has happened. The excess is what stays your responsibility in case of damage, even when insured. One is a temporary guarantee, the other a ceiling on liability.
Can you leave the deposit in cash?
No. The hold is placed on a bank card, and that card must be in the main driver's name. A card in a spouse's name, even on the same account, does not allow the keys to be handed over.
How long does it take to get the deposit back?
Several working days after the return, depending on your bank. The delay comes from the bank, not the agency. Keep the signed document stating the car was returned undamaged until the money is actually released.
What is never covered by the insurance?
Putting in the wrong fuel, and damage caused off the open road, on a track not authorised by the contract or on a beach. Underbody damage from speed bumps is the leading source of dispute in the region.
